Recently, US Senator Patrick Leahy said that “the US Justice System is the Envy of the World” (in connection with the proposed trial of terrorist Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in New York, which I favor, by the way, as does the Senator). But what he said about our (Criminal) Justice System? LOL!
Here are some other good ones I just thought of:
1. Dutch weather is the envy of the world.
2. French customer service is the envy of the world.
3. Italian drivers are the envy of the world.
4. German humor is the envy of the world.
5. Indian sports are the envy of the world.
6. British cuisine is the envy of the world.
7. Mexican technology is the envy of the world.
8. Russian public health is the envy of the world.
9. Brazilian punctuality is the envy of the world.
10. Saudi women are the envy of the world.
Well you get my drift. If you take offense at any of the above, feel free to poke fun at me. I am Hungarian, Jewish, Dutch, American and French, not necessarily in that order. leave comment here

I disagree with you. The Dutch have lost the equivalent of 400 deaths among their troops in Afghanistan (in proportion to our population). They have stuck by us for 8 years. Unlike Germany, they engage in combat, not just support.
It's their judgment now, that this war is not worth fighting because (1)victory is unlikely, (2) what happens in Afghanistan is unlikely to affect Holland and (3) it is not worth the cost. I agree with all three, and I feel that all three apply to the US as well.
Yes, I see your point; the Dutch have good reasons for breaking their NATO commitments. I suppose the 8,000 paratroopers of the 1st British Airborne who were killed, wounded, or captured jumping into Arnhem, Holland, would in hindsight consider their honoring a military commitment foolish since Operation Marketgarden victory was “unlikely”, (2) what happened in Holland was unlikely to affect Britain and (3) it was “not worth the cost”.
Nice ones. Of course you will be accused of stereotyping, and thus being a bigot. But I guess you can do this with humor, even if you can't as an academic.
When I lived as an American in Britain, my neighbors were of a sufficient quality so as to not expect me to justify the actions of the country from which I originated.
The commander of NATO forces said on the radio that the Dutch forces over many years made an exemplary contribution.
Certainly a rational reader must apply full credibility to the commanding General's statements. Anonomous commenters receive no such credibility. Ever think about starting your own blog? You have something to say.

3) re. Afganistan: the Dutch decision is a more complicated issue than both Tom and the anonymous commentator (why don't you sign your comments ??? !!!) say or imply: the social democrats refursed to extend the support for a longer period than the one they committed thgemselves to some years ago and since the other parties in the coalition government wanted to keep the extension option open, the coaslition was broken down and we will have new election. We have a rather different political system than the US, as you might know.

the study of different cultures, norms, national characters?

To Paul: I liked your weather better when I grew up there as a child, before global warming. Skating every winter, the Elf Steden Tocht every year, etc. (I understand that you had a good winter again this year, but it's getting rarer)...
