The other day, my wife and I walked by one of the movie theaters at the Galleria shopping mall, the Caremark theaters. We were stunned when we saw a sign posted at the entrance, stating in big black letters: “Do not bring in your own food, drink or fire arm.”
That’s it, I thought. This country is going back to the days of Tombstone and the O. K. Corral. The Wild West is coming back. It’ll soon be Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday against the Clanton brothers. Except that it won’t be clear who is Wyatt Earp and who is Billy Clanton.
Lead by states such as Texas, more and more states are now “open-carry.” This means that we all have the right to run around while visibly packing pistols.
Vigilantism is on the rise. it is increasingly accepted and even encouraged. Kyle Rittenhouse was acquitted after murdering two men, as was George Zimmerman in 2012 after executing Trayvon Martin. As in many other cases, self-defense was the winning argument.
The self-defense chimera is what drives this country’s insane proliferation of fire arms.
Americans are becoming universally armed. Vigilantism is on the rise. “Stand-your-ground” laws are increasingly used to justify murder under the guise of self-defense.
In fact, death is more likely to happen when both the aggressor and the victim are armed than when the victim is unarmed. You are more likely to be shot to death if you own a firearm than if you don’t. Some protection!
This is not to deny that crime has been rising, both violent and property. A recent worrisome fad is smash-and-grab:
large groups of people storm shopping malls, invade upscale stores such as Nordstrom and jewelry stores, grab merchandise and quickly disappear. No question about it: The country is moving in the wrong direction
In the 19th century, lawlessness in the Wild West was confronted with measures such as Posse Comitatus: The sheriff mobilized citizens on the spot to suppress lawlessness.
Or a group of citizens marched on the local jailhouse and demanded that the sheriff hand over the hated suspect for a swift hanging without trial.
And of course, when it came to black people, there was the abomination of massive amounts of lynchings, more often than not that of innocent people. This is the direction in which we seem to be moving.

Tom, I love how clearly you can state your mind and heart... and leave room for conversation.
Yes, it sure looks like more more and people are demanding that their freedom to act as they please is more important than cooperation, harmony and working toward everyone's good.
Thanks, Hutch!
I'm glad you agree
Hey Tom,
I am glad you wrote about this. What has been happening the last couple of years leaves me speechless. You probably saw the opinion in the post the other day that said by any measure our democracy is probably on its last legs. So much has changed since 2016. It feels like a different culture entirely. Anytime you’re on the freeway you are in a new sort of danger. Anytime you shop you are in more danger than you were in 2015. So people stay in their house, stream movies and order groceries and food if they can afford it.
Also, a friend and I have gone back-and-forth for a few years about whether we are in a similar state as Germany was in the 1930s. I think we are both agreeing that we are much closer in the last few years than we have ever been before.
Hey Don,
these are somber thoughts and somber prognoses. I'm afraid that I have to agree with you to a large extent. I would add that we (and the rest of the world) are going through a perfect storm due to the added misery caused by Covid. So I want to try to ingest the element of "hope" into the conversation, hope that things will turn around, at least to some extent...
I'll translate the main idea of Frank's Dutch comment:
"ZOOITJE" means: A MESS.
He says that in Holland and other European countries the world is derailing. They ae starting a lockdown today, which is very bad for the independent small businesses such as his daughter's...
Hope! Yes we have to have hope, that this country and others will see a better day.
how do we fix it all. Tom?? [and you left out "ghost guns"!]
Sylvia sees value in hope, as I do. Others may find it idle. Bill's question may be rhetorical....
Tom, you are right and that we should not lose hope. I am sure you saw this article in the Post. The USA has suffered two terrible traumas: first Trump, then Covid. The Republicans are so cowardly regarding Trump. It’s “Lord of the Flies“. The only one with balls is Liz Cheney.
