Why are we in Pakistan - and Everywhere else?

By Tom Kando

Day after day, we read how much the Pakistanis hate us, and how they blame us for all their woes. Some believe that car bombings, such as the one that killed 150 people last week, are carried out by Americans. Sure. And the World Trade Center was blown up by George W. Bush, right? Why on earth does America behave this way? We just increased our aid package to Pakistan by $8 billion. That’s over and beyond the annual billions we have already been spending on that country for God knows how many years. When two married people hate each other, they get a divorce. Why are we even there? Oh yes, I forgot - Al Qaeda, the Taliban, terrorism.

If that’s the reason, then we should also be in all the other potential havens for terrorists, including Somalia, Sudan, Uzbekistan, Yemen, Iran, North Korea, Chechnya, practically every other Middle Eastern country, half of Africa, and don’t forget the narco-terrorists in Latin America. We should be "nation building" not just in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan, but also in dozens of other countries.
Is there a quicker way for America to bleed and to spend itself into oblivion? Nuts!

The short answer is: "The Military-Industrial Complex." It is interesting that it now controls Obama, who sent his campaign rhetoric nemesis Blackwater into Pakistan under the name Xe.

Let Obama have his healtcare and continue the dreaded Obamanomics. That would be the quickest way.

There are basically two Pakistans. There is the industrialized south and the, for lack of a better term, hillbilly north. Due to the Taliban, Al Quida, Hezbollah, [insert random terrorist name generator], there's been a fight going on that dates back to the first death in Kashmir. There's always been a fight between the two groups of people and we're trying to push the balance towards the government so we can get at the terrorist hillbillies.

Will it work? Are we doing the right thing? I have no clue. But that's the reason we're there.

========================
North Korea - We are still at war with them. We have a large force in South Korea in the event the cease fire is ended.

Africa - we should really be doing more there instead of the middle east. We could have so much more of a positive effect.

Former USSR states - one of the reasons we're punching a hole in the Middle East is the create a base of operations to assist all these little "stan" nations. At least that was one of the reasons.

I don't approve or disapprove of any of this. It just is.

Gordon makes a good point - The Military-Industrial Complex is a good short-hand term for the complex web of forces that perpetuate excessive military spending.

Hispanicontheright also: There are many ways to spend ourselves into poverty - overspend on guns, overspend on butter, overspend on both guns and butter...

American Warmonger: Good description of some of the complexities of our involvement in the Middle East, Central Asia and elsewhere...I am glad I am not in charge...

Many ways to overspend but none quicker than Obama spending money we don't even have.
